Choosing the Best Toothpaste for Children

Choosing the best toothpaste for children is important to maintain good oral hygiene. Various products are available that contain different flavors, consistencies, abrasives, and artificial sweeteners, and the amount of fluoride can create confusion in choosing the best toothpaste for children.
Choosing the best toothpaste for children depends on their age and the ability to brush their teeth. Parents must be mindful of a few points while choosing toothpaste for children.

These are as follows:

  • Fluoride in toothpaste: Using toothpaste that contains fluoride in adequate amounts is necessary and safe to keep the teeth free from decay. Fluoride can enhance the remineralization of early enamel lesions, make enamel more acid-resistant, and inhibit bacterial activity.
  • Dosage of fluoride in toothpaste: The dosage of fluoride in children’s toothpaste must not be less than 1,000 ppm. A higher concentration of fluoride is recommended to prevent cavities in the teeth.
  • Amount of toothpaste to be used: Using a small smear of toothpaste about the size of a rice grain is recommended for children, as the tooth does not erupt until the age of 3 years. For children between 3 and 6 years of age, a pea-sized smear of toothpaste is recommended.
  • Brushing frequency: Cleaning the gums with a damp cloth to clear away bacteria until the eruption of the first tooth is important. After the eruption of teeth, brushing with a soft-bristled toothbrush twice daily is recommended.
  • Flavors in kid’s toothpaste: Choose pleasant flavors to make brushing a more interesting and fun part of the dental routine. The use of fruit-flavored toothpaste is recommended for kids.
Avoid using adult toothpaste for children, as it contains higher levels of fluoride content and may stain the child’s teeth with excessive exposure.
