How Can Vaping Affect My Teen’s Oral Health?

Vaping is the act of inhaling and exhaling nicotine vapor through the mouth by using an electronic device called an e-cigarette that vaporizes liquids. Teenagers may think e-cigarettes are less harmful than traditional smoking, but this is not true. The inhaled vapor may have nicotine particles that inhibit blood flow to the gum tissue, which leads to severe gum and oral diseases without any symptoms in earlier stages.

Signs and symptoms

  • Bleeding gums
  • Bad breath
  • Loose teeth
  • Dry mouth
  • Dry cough
  • Space between teeth

Oral problems due to vaping

  • Dry mouth: The use of nicotine can increase the risk of gum diseases, tooth staining, and tooth decay. Saliva production is important to maintain oral health. Nicotine vapors can alter the blood flow to the gum tissues and reduce saliva production, causing dry mouth in teenagers.
  • Stomatitis: Ulcers may appear due to the extreme heat of the liquid. As it is vaporized on the upper palate, this may cause irritation, redness, and cracking of the oral tissues.
  • Tooth Sensitivity: If the roots of the tooth are exposed to heat or cold, tooth sensitivity may occur. Nicotine and heat from vapor can cause tooth sensitivity.
  • Bruxism: Vape pens that contain nicotine can cause bruxism, which eventually causes jaw pain.

Preventive measures

  • Quit smoking
  • Keep hydrated
  • Clean teeth and gums regularly
  • Avoid alcohol consumption
  • Regular dental check-ups
