How oral health sways overall health

Most studies concerning the relationship between oral health and systemic health are focused on periodontal(the attachment apparatus of the teeth) disease, by far the most common oral infection. Periodontal infections result from accumulation of plaque, the biofilm which hosts several bacteria, on the teeth. It has been suggested that these bacteria move into the blood stream, form clumps, and trigger systemic inflammation.

Inflammatory response is a normal response of the body to fight harmful stimuli. Gum disease and cardiovascular disease are associated with the same inflammatory response, consequently leading to swelling of cells and tissues causing the arteries to narrow down and increase the risk of blood clots.

Other conditions which periodontal disease can eventually lead to include:

  • Dementia
  • Respiratory infections
  • Diabetes
  • Pregnancy complications
  • Rheumatoid arthritis

All of the above mentioned conditions are suggested to result from the inflammatory mediators released in response to the swollen gums or the bacteria moving directly into the blood stream

  • Maintain good oral health by brushing twice a day and flossing.
  • Eat a well balanced diet.
  • Limit the consumption of sugary foods and drinks.
  • Avoid smoking cigarettes or chewing tobacco products.

We have several effective treatments for periodontal disease ranging from nonsurgical procedures such as root cleaning and the local application of antimicrobials to conventional or laser gum surgery, for treating more serious conditions. To keep your gums healthy between office visits, we can help you develop an effective oral hygiene routine you can practice at home.
